In September 2019 I was invited by UCLA to travel to Dunhuang, Gansu Province, China to participate in a group project centered around the Buddhist Mogao Caves and the Vimalakirti Sutra. Every night during the program I wrote a sketch of a song that would be the foundation of this album. Pieces of the songs are made of field recordings I took throughout the day in the caves and in the town of Dunhuang. The album aims to capture the vast emptiness of the Hexi Corridor in the Gobi Desert and the majesty of the Mogao Caves.
